Save Money in the Car

Optimize Your Commute

If you must drive you car to and from the same locations on a regular basis, such as commuting to and from work, figure out the route that optimizes your fuel usage.

It's a good idea to optimize your route for any journey by automobile. This may mean travelling side roads instead of driving on major (and frequently congested) highways. Plan your road trip to make as few left turns as possible. Right turns typically take less time and therefore require less fuel. You should also consider other variables like total time of travel, average speed, total distance and any steep hills. If you can log your estimated MPG for such trips and compare it between routes, you ought to be able to see one route that is optimized to get you where you need to go for the least amount of gas and money.
